If you live in a rural area or a small community or if you have a cottage, chances are you have a septic system. Septic systems are onsite treatment units that eliminate the need for municipal sewers in rural areas. Anything that goes down the drain — every shower drip and every toilet flush — flows to the septic system. The septic tank separates solids from liquids, the solids are contained with in the septic tank. That is why it is important to get your septic tank pumped to prevent solids from moving out into the leaching field clogging the distribution lines and preventing the liquids or "effluent" from moving into the ground. This is where micro organisms can then treat and clean the effluent and allow it to back into the ground water.
